What’s that you say?

When the audio isn’t good, the audience perceives the overall quality of your broadcast or stream isn’t good. You can have audio without video, but not video without audio.

We brought together some audio experts from different mediums to discuss how to get the best quality audio when streaming – Paige Flenniken, an opera singer and Sales Director at AVNation Media, Coran Smith, a musician, producer, jack of all trades and Technical Specialist at AVMI, and Becca Sullins, a former theatre professional and Senior Design Engineer at ProMedia Audio Video. Our panelists joined moderator, Deborah Jones, AV/IT Sales Manager at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre, to impart some vital audio knowledge on what factors are important in streaming audio:

  • The way we are listening to audio is changing – live vs. streaming and from different types of locations – offices, homes, even on the go. The audio needs to be properly installed, wired, and set up for the individual needs of the video or broadcast.
  • Make sure all your settings from different interfaces and platforms are talking to each other and communicating well.
  • Understand client expectations and communicate them clearly. Those expectations can vary widely depending on the type of broadcast or stream.
  • For quality audio, you need to train your ears to hear the things you would normally filter out, such as background noises. Ringing out the room before setting up produces better quality.
  • Understand what you’re trying to produce, who you are producing it for, and what you’re willing to give up in order to accomplish your goals.
